Born:
1964 Date of Eagle Scout Award: 01/82 (I know I squeaked in just
under the birthday deadline! ) Date of HS Graduation: Cardinal
Mooney H.S. Class of 1982
Anticipated Plans After Graduation or where did you
graduate from and what are you doing now: I graduated from Allegheny
College in 1986 with degrees in both English literature and Chemistry. I then
went on to graduate school in Chemistry at Cornell University, where I received
a Masters degree in 1989 and a PhD in 1992. In 1992 I began post-doctoral
studies in structure-based anti-cancer drug design at the medical school of
University of California, San Francisco. Since 1997 I have worked in
biotechnology and I am now the Director of Structural Biology at Exelixis,
where we currently (2007) have 14 compounds in cancer clinical trials. All of
my scouting experience and my Eagle project directly prepared me for the
demands of two senior research projects in college, and a doctoral dissertation
in graduate school. My non-scouting classmates had a much tougher time of it!
Project Description: I organized and put-on
a Karate demonstration show (at MOS) to raise money for Multiple
Schlerosis.
Favorite Camping Experience: Two favorites:
the summers were always spectacular at Masawepie, but my favorite was joining
Len Angie's previous Troop 346 for a 70-miler backpacking expedition in the
Adirondack Mtns. My other favorite was the absolutely horrendous weather we
would usually have in the old bottomless canvas tents while winter camping at
Camp Cutler!
